Steven Ray Hughes   Artist Painter
Harlem, Montana

I remember looking at it: the colors, the textures, the mood.

I remember the awe. I remember thinking that it was miraculous.

It was the work of my Mother: a pastoral romantic landscape with a red barn and a pond.

The sky was turbulent.  It was a paint by number painting.  I was 6.

I remember looking at it: it was geometric, simple, linear.

I couldn't believe it was created by human hands.

I looked at it every night before I went to sleep.  It was taped to the wall next to my bed.

It was drawn and given to me by my teacher.  It was a car and I was 7.

I remember looking at it: an ancient sailing ship with a red cross on the sails.  I was drawing it.

The teacher would have me draw in the back of the class.  The class ran much smoother when I was drawing.

I saw the picture hanging in the hallway by the office.  (I went to the office often.)

I couldn't believe I did it. I was 8.

In the years since, I have found solace, direction and validation in the arts;

from formal training and an M.A. in the fine arts, to the major museums of the world,

to the self-taught folk artist, to nature, to spirituality and to children, I still look.

From memory, imagination, viewing and pictures I respond to the experience of looking through the interpretation

of thought and feelings. I apply the results in a variety of media and styles.

You see here some of the results.  And, still I look!            Steven R. Hughes  '07
